Meet the People behind Surf's Up

Three years ago we made the big change, left the Hawkesbury Valley and landed in picturesque Gerringong. We commenced trading in December 2003 and sometimes still can’t believe we have a business to run.

"Surf’s Up" came out of our talks as we walked around the beautiful headland at Gerringong, on afternoons of no swell or onshore conditions, checking out the whales and waves.

It has always been a challenge to find just the right gift for various family members and we thought there needs to be a place to see a range of surf culture/memorabilia for the surfer(s) in the family.

There aren’t too many surf shops that sell items of surf culture. So we saw a gap in the market that could lead to a better lifestyle. This led to the creation of "Surf’s Up". Among the wide range of surf

related items is something unique in Australian Surf Shops. We sell what the others don’t.

Fortunately, we bring different skills to the business. Scott is the surfer from way back – and still is – and brings his creative talents, while Angela has worked many years in the retail book trade, and is the business brain.

Scott started off in 1966 on a 9’6” Ron surfboard (he still has it). He learnt to surf during school holiday camping trips on the central coast of NSW. He had the bug at an early age (about 9), riding a blow-up surf-o-plane on reef waves and heavy shorebreaks. He was allowed to buy his first board only after he qualified for the Lifesaving Bronze Medallion Award. Many short boards and long boards later, he is still at it and enjoying the thrill of riding a wave more than ever.

Angela came into surfing when she met Scott in 1988. Although, as a child, she did spend most Sundays (after church, of course)

on the beaches of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. The family moved back to Victoria and Angela was in the southern state until a fateful day in 1988 on a trip into the Daintree Rainforest, when this bloke sat next to her on the bus ... and the rest is happy history.

Angela rides a body board sometimes but certainly enjoys the surfing life as much as Scott. She has had a few attempts on a board, but has probably left it a bit late.

Have you ever been able to walk across the rolling hills to get your bird (feathered variety) count up, breathe in the fresh country or sea air in one direction and check out the surf in the other and arrive at work 10 minutes later? Once inside the shop we can again check out the surf (we even get people phoning us for a surf report).
